Special Hobby Grumman Guardian AF-2W “Hunter” in 1/48 scale, box SH48158. Scheme is BuNo. 124809, an AF-2W that operated off the USS Bairoko circa 1954.
This kit was built in collaboration with Flight Line Media , Special Hobby and TruColor Paint.
A fine kit that goes quite well in assembly, with a combination of mixed media (styrene, resin and photoetch) parts inside the box which makes it a very complete kit just out of the box. The cockpit is properly detailed which is a given since the canopy transparencies are big and clear.
The only complexity I found was that the prop hub was resin and the blades styrene and they really didn’t have real positioning keys so to line up all props properly was an act of juggling. When it was done I found they also provide the styrene hub in the sprues… go figure!
Decal set is of good quality and settled down well over an acrylic gloss coat using solvaset as a fixer.
For the paint scheme I started with a black basing done with Mr. Surfacer 1500 and Tamiya flat white. For the overall airframe I used Tru-Color TCP-1231 Deep Blue Black, and TCP-1004 White. Tru-Color paints lays down very smooth and opacity control is easy to execute, it had good adhesion, resilient to scratches and masking tape pulls. I tested it with their propietary thinner, MLT and generic laquer thinner and in all cases worked flawlessly. They have a very wide military color range and I see myself using them more often in the near future.
Hope you like it.
